The term sculpture has a great classical connotation. However, in the Expressan Sculptors section we bring together artists with a new form of expression, who experiment with space, forms, aesthetics and materials. Angeles Marco, our next sculptor, who undoubtedly belonged to that generation that transformed sculptural art and was called New Spanish Sculpture.
Ángeles Marco (Valencia, 1947-2008) is among the main figures responsible for this flow of renewal in the Spanish sculpture scene and which today serves as inspiration for new generations.
Doctor in Fine Arts since 1987 from the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, she combined teaching with sculptural creation for two decades. Her works can be found in the best public and private collections and she has received important awards such as the Alfonso Roig Prize from the Provincial Council of Valencia which she obtained in 1988 or the Medal of the Faculty of Fine Arts of San Carlos in 2006.
The approaches present in Angeles Marco’s artistic work have an influence on minimalism: selection of industrial materials or the construction of the works themselves. His artistic production is structured by series where iron becomes his favourite material, although he also worked with plastic, rubber or glass. In each of his projects he reviews ideas or conceptual concerns from different perspectives that he transposes and materializes in the pieces. In each of his works he formulates questions about existential ideas: the void, transit, loneliness, the invisible, travel, identity, absence or flight. His creative methodology allowed him to return to these conceptual ideas, opening up new lines of work as if all his sculptural work were permanently in his memory waiting for new contributions.
The first work by Ángeles Marco recorded in EXPRESSAN was “Ventanas, 1983”. A piece of sculpture presented at the exhibition “Diálogos entre una comisaria y una coleccionista” (Seville, 2016).The iron piece belongs to the “Series Ambiguous Spaces (image and fiction)” where she suggests an opening to other possibilities.

There have been many findings since then, however, we will highlight just a few of them. The IVAM (Valencia) in 2018 presented in its summer programme two collective exhibitions in which it selected several pieces by Ángeles Marco from different Series, where we can analyse the evolution or the latent themes in each of them.
On the one hand within the exhibition “The emergence of abstraction” the piece “Palanca, 1987”, was presented, which belongs to the “Salto al Vacío Series”. An enigmatic work with a great visual narrative where the unstable forms and the reflection of the material, which acts as a mirror, take us to the particular metaphorical space of the artist.

On the other hand, in the exhibition entitled “A contratiempo, Medio siglo de artistas valencianas (1929-1980)” we could find several pieces belonging to the “Serie Modular (1974-1980)”. These are proposals that denote a few more beginnings towards basic formalism that will be transformed into installation pieces that seek greater communication with the space.

To conclude, I would like to refer to the pieces by Ángeles Marco presented in 2019 at the Museo Patio Herreriano (Valladolid), in the first edition of Encuentros. In this case, the pieces by the sculptor that belong to the Contemporary Art Collection correspond to the “Tránsito Series (1987-1988)”. One of the intense projects in which the sculptor, through conceptual pieces in black rubber, reflects on feelings such as anguish or loneliness. Mysterious passages that invite us to enter the artist’s universe.
